BRIEF HISTORY
The Howard Hughes Company, a remaining element of the famed aviator’s empire, began development of the Summerlin master-planned community in 1990. Ranked among the most successful, regional real estate development companies in North America, with more than 23,000 acres of land in Nevada, the company began with a vision of building a family community that would celebrate not only the gorgeous Southern Nevada landscape but offer the diverse citizenry a safe and secure community where they could raise their families.
The concept of a community of “villages” was developed with each Summerlin village centered around its own park, golf course or major amenity. During the last fifteen years, more than 150 different models have been built by 15 quality builders set in seventeen separate villages creating a self-contained community unlike any other in Southern Nevada.
Eventually there will be 30 villages, each featuring dozens of thoughtfully planned neighborhoods with a unique selection of homes, townhomes, condominiums and apartments. Every Summerlin village has its own distinctive architectural design, evident in streetscapes, landscaping and village walls. Currently there are more than 91,000 residents occupying almost 37,000 residential units. Build out will take approximately thirty years so Summerlin will be complete around 2020. At that time the population is estimated to rise to 160,000 residents.
